43K Wilderness Solutions is looking for permanent, full‐time Builder 2’s (Lead Hand) to work under the supervision of the site Foreman or Forewoman in Vancouver Island’s most beautiful and remote wilderness areas. The job will require you to be boots on the ground and includes some supervisory duties when the Foreman is away from site or needs assistance. We are looking for people with some supervision experience and diverse construction knowledge including framing, concrete and metal who also enjoy working in wild places. 43K offers competitive wages and benefits, including full health and dental, professional development opportunities and gear allowances.
43K’s specialty is working in challenging wilderness environments, often without electricity or other services. The job will require you to work out of town, in camp on long shifts. Our projects are always different ‐ from helicopter access bridges to trail construction to installing off‐the‐grid buildings ‐ we never do the same thing twice. A large portion of our projects include working with local communities and local First Nations.
Our current projects are located in Juan de Fuca, Cape Scott and Strathcona Provincial Parks as well as other areas of remote coastal British Columbia.

Responsibilities
- Able to build with minimal supervision
- Able to supervise job site,crew and subcontractors temporarily when Foreperson isn’t on site
- Able to assist foreman or forewoman with coordination of daily site activities like toolbox meetings, ensuring safety compliance, check ins, time cards, etc.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools, small machinery, chainsaws, survey equipment, etc.
- Work on all aspects of the build with limited amenities
- Follow Occupational Health and Safety Work Plans and Environmental Management Plans
- Work independently in small crews to execute work plans
- Working within local, remote communities with the utmost respect for them and their unique experiences
- Safely maintain equipment and clean job sites
Relevant Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant construction experience or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year supervisor experience is an asset
- Knowledge of Worksafe BC and other Health and Safety regulations and processes
- Power tool experience, including chainsaws
- Backcountry experience, including hiking, camping, backpacking, etc.
- Work camp experience is an asset
- A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and ability to motivate team members
- Class 5 Driver’s License and trailer towing experience
- Intermediate First Aid plus Transportation Endorsement (required for all successful applicants), Advanced First Aid is considered an asset..
Job Conditions
- Working in physically challenging, unserviced, remote locations
- Working in “camp” (tents, yurts, cabins, hotels, vacation rentals)
- Working long shifts
- Driving on gravel roads, pulling small trailers
- Working in and around helicopters, barges and boats
- Working in adverse and varied weather conditions twelve months of the year
- Strict no pet policy while at work and in camp
